Today's discussion: Is Gatsby a good person or not?

Many students argue that Gatsby is not even "great" and is selfish, but my group and I think he is actually not a bad person. Yes, many say all the parties he makes and his generosity can be fake and that he does it so people can just talk of what a nice person he is, but some of his actions actually demonstrate he is kind. What if he actually means everything he does for people and doesn't just do it to increase his ego? For instance, when he was younger he helped save Dan Cody and it never mentioned that he did it for a reward, he was just doing the right thing and trying to be helpful. Also, I don't think he is selfish because he shares many of his things with others and he clearly stated that everything he owns is for Daisy. Personally, I think a selfish person would just worry for themselves and wouldn't do that, yet it seems that Gatsby would give it all for the person he loves.
